National and provincial authorities are not being talkative
about this attack
. Théo Kasi, governor of South Kivu, assures us that investigations are underway, without saying more. Night patrols are organized and checkpoints have been multiplied in the city. However, many gray areas still persist on the identity of these attackers and their organization.
According to the authorities, these armed men withdrew to the territories of Walungu and Kabare, near the town of Bukavu, where security and stalking operations are being deployed. Several sources reveal that some of them are demobilized ex-combatants who were waiting to be integrated into the disarmament process still underway. Other fighters are also believed to come from Kamamba, Kabare territory, where several militias are attacking army positions in the area of Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
According to a military source, "
there are old militias and others being created
".
Pending the outcome of ongoing investigations and military operations, the authorities believe that these attackers are acting to undermine the state's internal security by attacking provincial institutions.
