- The staff is so incredibly competent.

You do your best for the patient and then you might go into the staff room and break down, says Michaela Norén who is the main safety representative for the Healthcare Association at SUS Malmö and Lund.

- There are probably some new mothers who notice it, that the staff goes from room to room and that they do not get the breastfeeding support they may need, she says.

Fine of SEK 75,000

The Swedish Work Environment Authority is now threatening a fine of SEK 75,000 if improvements are not made by January.

Several efforts have been made to reduce the pressure on nurses and midwives, who are the ones who have primarily turned to the Swedish Work Environment Authority with their concerns.

- We know what we want to do and we have removed tasks to relieve the midwives that someone else can do as well, says Pia Teleman who is operations manager for gynecology at SUS Malmö / Lund.

But that has not been enough, according to the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

The safety representative has resigned

“Not only do the staff feel bad about how the situation has been and is, there is also a great deal of concern for the future.

They are worried about their own health, about the health of their colleagues and about colleagues resigning and quitting.

The local safety representative has recently resigned and will quit soon, ”it says in the decision from the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

It is the same safety representative who raised the issues in the department at first.

No applicants for vacancies

A total of eight midwives were missing to reach a minimum level of staffing in September - and despite several advertisements, no one had applied for the positions.

This makes it difficult to staff all shifts and the staff's recovery becomes worse.

According to Pia Teleman, they have now succeeded in appointing one of the posts - but that is far from enough.

When the inspection from the Swedish Work Environment Authority was made in September, 80 of the work shifts during the next schedule period were not filled with staff.

In the clip, the Healthcare Association's representative Michaela Norén talks about the situation - in addition, the department head Pia Teleman responds to the criticism.
