Three female university students have created a vibrating pillow that acts as an alarm clock, to help people of determination who are deaf or hard of hearing wake up at the time they specify, without having to resort to someone to help them wake up on time.

The student, Sarah Emad Al-Sumaidi, told "Emirates Today" that she participated with her colleagues Shamsa Saif Al-Suwaidi and Shamma Ahmed Al-Khaja, in implementing the project, under the supervision of their teacher, Radwa Ismail, to compete among the top 100 student projects at the state level, in the Science, Technology and Innovation Festival competition. Organized by the Ministry of Education, at Festival Arena Dubai, last academic year.

The student explained the components of the project and the way it works, where a sound-sensitive device is used, and it is installed in the pillow or bedding, and connected to the vibration device. When the information is programmed and transmitted to the device, the vibration machine inside the pillow vibrates when the acoustic alarm goes off, and then the pillow automatically vibrates, waking up the sleeping person.

On the reason for choosing the idea of the “vibrating pillow” project, Al-Sumaidi said that “necessity is the mother of invention, and when we face certain problems in life, we must not give up, and look for appropriate solutions to overcome them. Waking up at a specific time in the morning is easy and natural for the general public, as alarm clocks have become The audio is easy to use, but there are many people who do not benefit from the use of these devices, such as those who suffer from hearing impairment, people of determination or those who suffer from heavy sleep.”

She added that the "vibrating pillow" project is an alarm for a specific group, instead of an audio alarm, using a vibrating device inside the pillow to wake the person at the specified time.
