• Rescue Cleo, the Australian Madeleine McCann

Terence Darrell Kelly.

That is the full name of the 36-year-old man accused of kidnapping Cleo Smith, the four-year-old girl who disappeared from the

campsite

where he was with his family on the west coast of Australia, on 16 October.

Cleo was rescued by police early Wednesday morning from a house in Carnarvon, a small town of fewer than 5,000 inhabitants in the state of Western Australia.

At that time, Kelly was not in the house, who was arrested minutes later on a street near the house where Cleo was being kidnapped.

Australian media reported Thursday that Kelly had a room full of dolls in her home.

Cleo was found there.

"The lights were on and

she was playing

with the toys," explained Sergeant Major Cameron Blaine, who participated in the operation.

On social media there is a video circulating in which Kelly appears recording himself inside a room full of dozens of dolls, some still packed.

The defendant also uploaded photos to Facebook in April 2020

taking a doll for a car ride.

"I love taking my dolls for a walk, combing their hair and taking selfies in public with them," read the message accompanying the snapshot.

In another post dated July 2020, Kelly is shown wearing a Bratz shirt and holding two other toys.

"Nothing better than relaxing at home with Bratz dolls," it read.

A worker at a Carnarvon toy store told local television on Thursday that he had sold many dolls to Kelly over several years and that Kelly

always asked him to gift them.

Kidnapping of another minor under 16 years of age

"He was a suspect known to the police," Deputy Police Commissioner Col Blanch said after the arrest.

Kelly had a record for the kidnapping of another minor under the age of 16.

It is the information that has emerged to the Australian media after the defendant appeared this Thursday before a court in Carnarvon.

Blanch noted that cell phone data and CCTV footage from a car that arrived in Carnarvon the night Cleo disappeared led police to raid Kelly's home.

Authorities have assured that

Kelly has no connection to the Smith family and that he acted alone

.

"The accused appeared to be overweight, was barefoot, wore his curly black hair and did not show much emotion, apart from appearing agitated with the presence of two journalists," highlights a chronicle from the court signed by the Australian newspaper ABC News.

Kelly, who is in custody, did not request bail and was not required to plead guilty.

"The man took a while to recognize his name and expressed his anger at the presence of the media, as he was flanked by two policemen," the article continues.

Several times during his court appearance, Kelly asked reporters what they were looking at and told them that when they released him, he would come after them.

"Neighbors described Kelly as a lonely man who lived alone on his public housing property. In recent days, residents said that he

had been going in and out of the house with groceries,

" adds another article from The Sydney Morning Herald. .

On October 16, the Smith family was preparing to spend a few days of vacation at the isolated Blowholes campsite, located just behind a beach and surrounded by dunes.

Ellie, the mother, told officers that Cleo had woken up at 1:30 a.m. to ask for some water before continuing to sleep.

When Ellie woke up again at 6:00 AM, Cleo was no longer inside the store.

The police explained during the investigation that the tent's zipper was at such a height that they assumed the girl had been abducted.
