November 04, 2021 - Portugal's president announced in a televised speech to the nation the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections for January 30, following the defeat of the minority socialist government in a key vote on the budget law.

The announcement was widely expected.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa previously said Portugal would go to the polls two years earlier than expected if the government's 2022 state budget proposal was rejected by Parliament, which happened last week.
