A judicial investigation was opened Thursday for "attempted murder" after the assault on Tuesday evening of a police officer, off duty and in civilian clothes, who was returning to his home by train in Val-d'Oise, we learned near the Pontoise prosecutor's office.

The prosecutor requested the provisional detention of the four people arrested following the assault on the police officer, after their custody.

The facts took place Tuesday around 11 p.m. on line H of the Transilien connecting Paris to Persan-Beaumont (Val-d'Oise).

The 26-year-old victim is an official in the brigade of Ile-de-France networks (BRF).

The policeman had just left his service at the Gare du Nord in Paris and was returning to his home in civilian clothes, according to a source familiar with the matter.

On the train, a group of four people recognized him and attacked him, calling him a "shit cop." They beat him up and tried to take his things, the source said. Travelers intervened to protect the police officer and the four attackers fled at the next stop. Presenting in particular a broken nose and bruises on his face, the police officer lodged a complaint with the Ermont police station for aggravated willful violence.

A few hours after the incident, the four men, aged 25, 23, 20 and 17, were arrested by the gendarmes in Auvers-sur-Oise (Val-d'Oise) for an aggravated theft.

Three of them admitted to being the perpetrators of the police officer's assault.

A judicial investigation was also opened in particular for the counts of "theft with violence" and "extortion".

Three of the accused are known to the justice services, said the Pontoise prosecutor's office in a press release.

The investigation was entrusted to the departmental security of Val-d'Oise.
