A man taken care of at the Louis Raffelli hospital in Manosque (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) fled the establishment this Saturday evening by borrowing a fire ambulance.

Opening of an investigation

The man had insulted the nursing staff when he arrived at the hospital.

His escape did not last long, however.

While driving the stolen car, the patient collided with a pole a few meters from the hospital.

He was taken into police custody before being released.

During his hearing, he explained that he had suffered from an attack of dementia.

An investigation has been opened.

The firefighters had been dispatched to the scene for an intervention on an engine that gave off smoke in an air duct.

Their intervention notably required the evacuation of around thirty patients.

The fugitive was one of these.

He had taken advantage of the commotion to enter the airlock where the ambulance was parked.
