is urgent to speak with the priest of the Logroño prison to which the judge sent him last Sunday after indicting him for the crime of
Álex
, the nine-year-old boy whom he allegedly strangled last Thursday at his home in
Lardero
(
La Rioja
) after being deceived from a park. This has been his only request and, moreover, he has made it in writing. He wants to meet with the priest as soon as possible and has stated this on several occasions.
The prison has applied the anti-suicide protocol and has assigned him an inmate known as
a shadow prisoner
, who performs surveillance functions.
Having to be quarantined for 10 days by Covid protocol - all inmates who have just entered this measure are imposed for health security reasons -, he remains guarded in a cell for observation calls with direct control.
It is, as EL MUNDO has learned, a cabin with a glass from which the adjoining cell can be seen, where there are two inmates who take turns watching him, since he has to be guarded all day.
The cell is located in the isolation module.
In the 72 hours he has been in jail, Almeida has not uttered a single word, continuing the attitude he has maintained since the Civil Guard surprised him with Alex in his arms last Thursday night.
He does not speak with the officials and maintains a behavior of indifference, although he is withdrawn, disciplined and polite.
In addition, prison sources reveal, he has also attended an instance to hold a meeting with the educator and the prison social worker, something that is common in the income module.
Two hours of patio
Álex's alleged murderer only has two hours of patio a day.
He goes out alone and consumes time sitting down.
Then go back to the observation cell.
Almeida cannot go to the commissary to buy because he has no money nor has he asked to make a phone call, reveal the same sources.
Nor does he have a television in his cell.
The inmate, likewise, has not been well received by the prison population of Logroño.
Two of the acts for which he was convicted in 1993 and 1998, and his last alleged crime, contravene prison laws: neither rapists, nor abusers, nor pedophiles, nor murderers of children.
For this reason, upon arrival - despite the secrecy with which his entry into the prison was designed - he was received with insults and shouts from the rest of the prisoners.
After staying in the admission module for the first hours of his arrival, Francisco Javier Almeida was transferred to the isolation unit.
The prison management was quick at all times to isolate him in his observation cell.
The priority was to prevent him from having any eye contact with other prisoners and thus avoid possible confrontations.
Background
Only once he was at his destination, the officials transferred the two trusted prisoners to the adjoining cell to monitor him 24 hours a day and prevent him from harming himself, the same sources consulted specify.
Almeida knows the terrain on which he treads - he has been in jail for the last 23 years - and that is why he is cautious.
He knows that good behavior is essential to access, for example, paid work within the prison.
In the more than two decades that he remained behind bars for abusing a 13-year-old girl and for, nine years later, stabbing a real estate agent to death, he performed different tasks in the El Dueso prison (Cantabria).
He was in the Education and Respect Module (MER) -an isolated space, within the prisons, subject to a particular regulation, with voluntary participation of the inmates- and he participated in wardrobe, packaging and laundry work.
That good behavior led him to access 38 prison permits from 2013, when he had been locked up for 15 years.
In neither of those exits he had problems, with which he was granted the third degree in 2020 and, later, parole.
