In the schedule for emergency care and the ambulance at Kiruna Hospital, half of the licensed nurses are missing for the operation to be able to handle round-the-clock staffing.

The operation is now being saved by the existing staff taking extra shifts and the emergency care in Kiruna having a dispensation to take in hired nurses.

- I think we have a well-functioning business seen from the whole perspective in that we have recurring hourly temps and company nurses, says operations manager Helena Fredriksson Ågren.

Better tool to fill the gaps

The shortage of nurses is not new, but the severe shortage of staff has been going on for a long time and the operations at the emergency department and the ambulance go around with overtime, temporary staff and temporary nurses.

- The supply of skills is still difficult when it comes to licensed nurses, but on the other hand it feels stable based on the fact that we have better tools to staff the gaps in the schedule, says Helena Fredriksson Ågren.
