Singer Alicia Robledo Benavente, known as
Malicia
and re-founder of the group Las Grecas in 2007,
died last night at her home in the San Blas district of
Madrid.
He was 67 years old.
According to medical sources, she had undergone liposuction (removal of fat from the abdominal area) nine days ago and did not suffer from any disease.
Her relatives notified the Summa medical services of the Community of Madrid late in the afternoon on Monday that they confirmed the death of the singer at her home. The body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine
where the autopsy was performed on Tuesday
. The doctors have verified that the operation was very recent and have taken several samples that will be sent to Toxicology to try to find out if there is any relationship between the surgery and his death.
Malicia
began her musical career by doing backing vocals for singers Francisco and Marián Conde. He recorded his first solo album in 1992. Two years later he tried again to resurrect Las Grecas with Carmela, the older of the two sisters of the historic duo. But after the death of his younger sister Tina from AIDS in 1995, he decided not to go ahead with the project. It was then that Malicia mounted the duo
Las Suecas
with another singer, with whom she published an album in 1996.
Malicia and Carmela got together again in 1997 for a project that was to be called Las Nuevas Grecas but in the end they decided to call it Las Grecas.
Malicia
had a contract with the record company that recorded
Las Suecas
,
Dismedic
de Barcelona, and was with both duos at the same time.
In 1999 Carmela and Malicia decided to separate and Carmela chose to continue the musical career of the duo Las Grecas with her niece Saray, daughter of her late sister Tina.
The duo was short-lived and dissolved.
They did not manage to record albums, or sign many contracts for performances, until Saray Muñoz decided to start her solo career.
In 2007 Malicia regained the rights to the name Las Grecas and re-founded the musical duo together with the singer Nani, which cost her a lot of criticism for using the name of the historic duo for her artistic career. They released four albums in ten years. The most famous one went on sale in 2012. It was titled Siglo XXI and one of its most listened to songs was the version of a Whitney Houston song titled
My Love will always be you
. In 2018 Malicia decided to release her second solo album Palante.
Carmela and Tina were the members of the duo Las Grecas in the 70s. Las Grecas were pioneers in a musical genre that fused flamenco and rock.
With their catchy songs they burst the sales charts and made the whole country dance.
The duo enjoyed great initial success with the song
I'm loving you madly
, selling half a million records with their first album in 1974. The group disbanded in 1979.
