Ethiopia declares a state of emergency

Ethiopia declared a state of emergency on Tuesday after rebel forces from the northern Tigray region said they were making territorial gains and were considering an advance on the capital, Addis Ababa.

The announcement of the imposition of emergency came through state media, two days after Prime Minister Abi Ahmed asked citizens to take up arms to defend themselves.

The authorities in Addis Ababa issued instructions to residents earlier today, Tuesday, to register their weapons and prepare to defend their neighborhoods.

The state of emergency was imposed after the Tigray People's Liberation Front said it had captured several towns in recent days and was looking to advance on Addis Ababa, some 380 km from its outpost.

The last time Ethiopia imposed the emergency was in February 2018 for a period of six months before the transfer of power to Abiy.

A curfew was imposed and people's movements were restricted.

The city administration said that citizens should register their weapons and gather in their neighborhoods.
