Former Facebook employee Frances Haugen is urging CEO Mark Zuckerberg to step down from the social media giant's leadership and allow for change rather than allocating resources to changing the company's name.

"I think it's very unlikely that there will be a change in the company as long as (Mark Zuckerberg) is CEO," Haugen said in her first public comments on Monday in Barcelona.

Haugen, a former content manager at Facebook, responded in the affirmative to the question whether Zuckerberg should resign.

"Maybe this is an opportunity for someone else to take over," said the former employee who leaked information about the company. "Facebook will be stronger with someone focused on security."

Facebook, which has 3 billion users in its online social networking apps, changed its name to Meta last week to focus on building the Metaverse, a shared virtual reality environment.

Haugen described the renaming as meaningless as security issues continue to be ignored, and added, "Facebook always chooses to expand rather than perfect the business."

Facebook's announcement came amid fierce criticism from lawmakers and regulators about the company's business practices, particularly its massive market power, and its algorithms and abuse monitoring decisions on its services.
