While the world is struggling to restore normal patterns of life after nearly two years of closure and restrictions due to the "Corona" pandemic, several European cities presented at "Expo 2020 Dubai" their experience in building societies that help give their residents better experiences based on sharing and building bridges of teamwork.
Eight European cities reviewed their experiences in trying to change the way people live in order to have more actual communication after long months of isolation due to the closure, during which people were forced to rely on technology to communicate digitally with each other.
The Italian pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai hosted representatives from eight European capitals of culture, including Matera, as the European Capital of Culture 2019, during the year prior to the pandemic.
Its representatives presented their initiative to communicate with Arab countries after signing a memorandum of understanding for this purpose in 2018.
"In the face of all the current difficult circumstances, (Expo 2020 Dubai) brings us hope, and lights the way for us, by bringing together participants from different parts of the world despite the difficulties," said Barbara Gessler, Director of the Innovative Europe Unit.
"In order to build on this positive momentum, (Expo 2020 Dubai) provides us with a platform to share ideas and raise awareness to address the major challenges facing the world," the spokeswoman added via video to the participants in the "European Capitals of Culture at (Expo 2020 Dubai)" event.
The program of the event is divided into four sections, including the musical performance (Open Voice), which Matera presents as a bridge between contemporary music and music known in the Lucania region in southern Italy.
The organizers of the event said that it aims to share the European Capitals of Culture initiative, which has contributed to transforming certain cities into more sustainable, beautiful and inclusive societies.
For his part, MIT professor of design and co-designer of the Italian pavilion, Carlo Rati, highlighted the importance of cities in helping people live in a real way, not digital, adding to the “Expo News Service”: “Look at what happened last year when many said that they are The end for cities and real life, and companies raced to encourage their employees to work from home.
While today the world is seeking to reopen, and I believe that (Expo 2020 Dubai), as the first huge event after the pandemic, shows the importance of the actual spaces.”
