Xinhua News Agency, Taipei, October 30 (Reporters Chen Jianxing and Xu Ruiqing) The epidemic situation on the island has not cleared, and Taiwan's political arena has recurred.

On December 18, the Taiwan region will vote on four “referendums” including “restart the nuclear four”, “anti-Laiyan pig import”, “referendum tied to the general election”, and “cherish algae reefs”.

As the date approaches, the issue of the "Four Referendums" continued to detonate this week, becoming a new hot spot for offensive and defensive parties on the island and public opinion.

What are the "four referendums"?

The "Restart Nuclear Fourth" case was led by Huang Shixiu, the founder of "Nuclear Energy Rumor Terminator", on the grounds that the "referendum" of "Nuclear Green" was passed in 2018, and the DPP authority's "Non-Nuclear Homeland" policy has been rejected by the majority of the people. But so far, they still insist on going their own way, deceiving the people on the grounds that nuclear waste cannot be processed and the fourth nuclear power plant takes a long time to restart, and refuse to implement the "referendum" of public opinion.

The "Anti-Leisure Pig Imports" case was led by the Chinese Kuomintang "legislator" Lin Weizhou. The reasons include: the DPP authorities announced that the import of ractopamine-containing U.S. pork will be opened on New Year's Day in 2021, and the decision-making process deliberately avoided supervision, which is like a "black box"; the people; Health cannot be a bargaining chip for profit trading.

The "referendum tied to the general election" case was led by the "legislator" Jiang Qichen of the Chinese Kuomintang. The reasons include: it can increase voter turnout and reduce administrative costs; this is an important proposition of the DPP, and the DPP should not forget its original intention.

The "Cherish Algae Reef" case was led by environmentalist Pan Zhongzheng on whether to approve the removal of the third natural gas receiving station of "China National Petroleum Corporation" from the coast and waters of Taoyuan's Datan Algae Reef.

In March 2020, the working ship of the receiving station project was broken and stranded, and the algal reef ecology was suspected to be damaged, which aroused social concern.

Environmental groups and the public launched a "referendum" in December of the same year.

The latest poll by the Lvying "Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation" shows that in the case of "If you vote tomorrow", the three cases of "anti-Lai pig import", "cherishing algae reef", and "referendum tied to the general election" all have an overwhelming advantage and tend to agree. The proportions were 68.1%, 47.7%, and 57.4%, respectively, and those who tended to disagree were 25.7%, 29.6%, and 34.2%, respectively. The “Restart Nuclear Fourth” case also tended to lead with consent, reaching 46.7%. The percentage of consent is higher than that of consent.

"Four referendums" triggered a political storm

The day after the poll was announced, Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen directly approved at a DPP meeting that “the KMT used the'referendum' as a tool for the party to fight against differences” and proposed a “four disagreements, Taiwan is more powerful” action plan, including More than a hundred "referendum" briefing sessions were held, and all party public officials were required to fully defend the "four disagreements."

Why did the "four referendums" make the DPP so vigilant?

The Taiwanese media explained the "mystery": Chen Baiwei, a "legislator" of the "Taiwan Foundation Progressive Party", was dismissed on the 23rd under the support of the Democratic Progressive Party. The authorities will face a crisis of confidence.

According to reports, after the passing of Chen Baiwei's recall case, the DPP held an emergency meeting and decided to take a full fight ahead of time and fully carry out political mobilization.

"Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation" Chairman You Yinglong believes that if the DPP’s "Four Referendums" fail miserably, the "Trinity" will be severely hit by Su Zhenchang, the head of Taiwan's administrative agency, to Tsai Ing-wen and the DPP authorities.

The supporters of the four "referendums" in the polls are quite cross-party. On the one hand, it is because young, highly educated, cross-party supporters choose to stand on the opposite side of the DPP.

The "four referendums" are about to come, how does the public opinion on the island evaluate it?

In the past few days, the media on the island have concentrated on criticizing the DPP’s statement on the "four referendums" as inconsistent with the facts, and they have completely forgotten their previous claims and actions.

The "China Times" commented that, except for the "Nuclear 4" issue, which the DPP has always opposed, the other three items were strongly advocated when it was in the opposition.

The DPP wants to persuade the people to vote 4 disagreements, but this is tantamount to slapping themselves.

Public opinion on the island mentioned that when Ma Ying-jeou was in power, Tsai Ing-wen, then chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party, led a demonstration against the import of "poisonous cows". After the Democratic Progressive Party came into power, it arbitrarily opened up the "Laizhu" without communication.

The "United Daily News" editorial pointed out that such swings and repetitions sacrificed the interests of farmers and ignored the health of the people. How can we persuade the public?

In the past, the DPP regarded the "referendum" as the main card of the gods. In 2017, it revised the law to lower the threshold of the "referendum". Unexpectedly, the following year's "referendum" was merged with the "9-in-one" election. The Tsai authorities were extremely embarrassed, so they “decoupled” the law.

How can this move around the law as a stepping stone not make the people angry?

The two cases of "Algae Reef" and "Nuclear Four" can be regarded as a vote of no confidence among the people on the unreasonable energy policy of the Tsai administration. The authorities will go their own way, and Taiwan is very likely to fall into a long-term power shortage crisis.

Taiwan scholar Liu Jincai believes that the DPP’s self-interest calculations have double standards, which gradually erode the legitimacy of its governance.

Freelance writer Yu Ruiming pointed out that the DPP’s inconsistent propositions and deeds are too numerous to document, and it treats the law as nothing, and the public opinion and criticism as awkward, making Taiwanese society enter a dead end of "no question of right or wrong, but only color."

Media person Peng Huixian pointed out that the DPP is a chameleon and has many unrighteous behaviors. It was "just right" to be beaten back in the "referendum."

The "Lianhe Pao" pointed out that the DPP authorities will inevitably label the "four referendums" as a "blue-green showdown" and elevate them to "a confrontation between national identity and anti-China ideology."

But doing so may not succeed. Excessive manipulation by those in power is likely to arouse people's disgust and receive greater counter-effects.
