If you consider yourself an unlucky person, you should review some of your convictions and change your way of thinking, the secret lies - fundamentally - in positive thinking and working to increase the odds of success.

In a report published by the Australian "readersdigest" magazine, the author Giuliana LaBianca reviews some of the traits and behaviors that distinguish lucky people from others, according to a number of research and scientific studies.

1. Communicate with others

In one study, Richard Wiseman, professor of psychology and author of The Luck Factor, gave volunteers a list of family names and asked them if they knew friends with these names. Half of the participants, rated as lucky, chose 8 names. or more, while a quarter of the participants in the unlucky group could do the same.

Commenting on these findings, Wiseman says, "Lucky people talk to a lot of people, attract others and maintain constant contact with them. These habits create a network of fortune, and increase the odds of building productive relationships."

2. Trust in intuition

In one study, British researchers found that intuition is often credible and stems from real physical cues, such as an increased heart rate and sweating.

Study participants were asked to try to win a card they had never played before.

The game was designed in such a way that no logical gameplay strategy could be followed, to encourage players to follow intuition, and each participant wore a heart rate monitor.

The results showed that changes in heart rate affected learning speed and how decisions were made, implying that physical cues played a crucial role in guiding choices.

3. Do not take chances with luck

Max Gunther, in his book How to Get Lucky, explains the possible consequences of gambling with coins.

“If you tossed a coin 1024 times, there would be 1 chance that the face of the image would appear on the coin 9 times in a row. But there would be 32 possibilities for it to appear 4 times in a row. How would you bet then? Most likely,” says Gunther.

4. Break the routine

To be lucky, try reading a new book each week, listening to a podcast on your way to work, trying a new hobby, or any activity that can open new doors for you.

5. Positive thinking

Weizmann found another difference between the lucky and the unlucky, which is the way they deal with problems.

Weizmann asked each participant—lucky or unlucky, in his view—to imagine being in a bank when an armed thief entered and fired a shot in the arm.

The results showed that the unlucky often said that being in the bank at that time was a misfortune, but the lucky ones considered that they survived the worst, such as being shot in the head.

"Psychologists call this ability to imagine what might happen, and not what actually happened, counterfactual thinking," Wiseman wrote.

His study confirmed that the lucky ones use this kind of thinking to mitigate the effects of bad luck.

6. Self-expression

"No one will notice you if you don't make them feel," says Megan Rhodes, a leadership coach in her book, Girls' Life.
