The corresponding document was circulated by the office of the US Director of National Intelligence.

"The intelligence community believes that Chinese officials probably did not know in advance about the existence of SARS-CoV-2 until researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology isolated it after recognizing the presence of the virus in the population," the report said.

The document also notes that if the coronavirus pandemic was launched due to a laboratory incident, then Chinese officials were not aware of it in the first months.

In August, the US intelligence community published declassified excerpts from a report to President Joe Biden on the origins of the coronavirus.

US intelligence claims the virus was not developed as a biological weapon.
