Three female Emirati university students have created a smart application that helps in understanding sign language by translating the speaker of determination (the mute) into written sentences that others can read and understand what they want from them.

The student, Sarah Salem Omar, who studies computer science, told "Emirates Today" that she participated with her two colleagues, Shawq Ali Al-Amiri and Maitha Ali Al-Shamsi, in the implementation of the application project, which they called "Speaking Hands", which is an intelligent translator that uses the camera to capture Sign language and its translation into written sentences that are easy to read by those dealing with “dumb” sufferers. The application also helps anyone who does not know sign language to speak to a person of determination, as he writes what he wants to say, and then the camera turns it into a sign language that the mute understands.

She stated that they use the application, in particular, the iPhone's camera, adding: "In the future, we aim to develop the application so that it is easier for policemen to communicate through it with people of determination of this category, if an accident, fire or crime occurs."

The student pointed out that the application that they completed within six months has a high cost of about 50 thousand dirhams, and therefore they are looking for a government agency to adopt the project and work to implement it, so that everyone can benefit from it.

She confirmed that they participated in the project in the Science, Technology and Innovation Festival, which was recently organized by the Ministry of Education, at the Festival Arena Dubai.
