On Sunday, more than 300 millimeters of rain fell over Catania on the east coast of Sicily.

- it corresponds to 300 liters of water per square meter in just a few hours.

The storm has caused major problems in the form of floods, flash floods and landslides in several places on the island.

At least three people have died when the water masses were caught, Reuters reports.

- It is not unusual with storms over the Mediterranean area this year, but the large amounts of rain in such a short time are extreme, says SVT's meteorologist Nitzan Cohen.

The storm, named Apollo after the Italian weather service, seems to be taking hold.

Ahead of the weekend, a red weather warning has been issued for Sicily and the region of Campania in southwestern Italy.

Affected again

Again, large amounts of rain, gusts of wind with hurricane strength and waves up to four meters high are expected.

The population is urged to stay at home and only go out on the roads in case of emergency.

- It is almost exactly the same areas that are affected once again with up to 200 millimeters of rain and strong winds.

People usually talk about a "Medicane", ie a hurricane-like storm over the Mediterranean instead of the Atlantic, says Nitzan Cohen.

Further west in the Mediterranean, the Spanish Meteorological Institute has issued a yellow weather warning for the Balearic Islands, ie the islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca.

Heavy rainfall is also expected over the western Iberian Peninsula and southeastern France.
