In 2020, 1.6 million visits were made to the country's emergency departments - a decrease of 13 percent compared with the previous year.

The number of visits decreased the most in April, 26 percent, there were also significantly fewer visits in March and May. 

It was mainly people over the age of 65 who applied to the emergency room to a lesser extent.

Visits decreased most in the Gävleborg Region and the Stockholm Region.

Shorter time for medical assessment

The National Board of Health and Welfare's statistics also show a clear reduction in the time to get an assessment from a doctor in the emergency room.

The median time decreased from 58 minutes in 2019 to 50 minutes in 2020.

Kiruna Hospital and Piteå Älvdals Hospital have the shortest waiting time before a doctor's assessment, where the median value was 18 minutes.

At Södersjukhuset in Stockholm, the corresponding time was 1 hour and 36 minutes.

The visits last for just over 3.5 hours

The total time of the visits also decreased slightly, in terms of the median total stay.

More than half of the visits to the emergency room last year lasted longer than 3 hours and 38 minutes.

This is a reduction of 4 minutes compared with 2019. Of the ten percent of cases where the patient was allowed to stay the longest in the emergency room, the visits lasted for more are 7 hours and 39 minutes.

Longest visit to the big cities

The total time for a visit to emergency rooms is generally the longest in the metropolitan regions.

Södersjukhuset's emergency department in Stockholm had the longest median stay in the country with 5 hours and 59 minutes.

The emergency department with the shortest stay in 2020 is Oskarshamn Hospital with a stay of 2 hours and 15 minutes.
