China has issued a warning to the United States, making it clear that it will "fight back" in the face of "attempts to improve" military ties with Taiwan. Defense Ministry spokesman Tan Kefei, commenting on Taipei President Tsai Ing-wen's interview with CNN in which he confirmed the presence of US soldiers on the island, warned that anyone opposing the "historical task of reunification is destined to fail ". Beijing considers Taiwan a rebel province destined for reunification even with the use of force, if necessary.
"If the United States continues to stubbornly cling to the illusion of using Taiwan to control China and attempts to improve military ties with Taiwan, China will resolutely oppose and counterattack," Tan warned. "The historic task of the reunification of the motherland must be fulfilled and it certainly will be. Any attempt to hinder national reunification and national renewal is doomed to fail," continued the spokesman, speaking during the monthly press conference held in virtual mode. The People's Liberation Army, Tan concluded, "will take all necessary measures to counter external interference and separatist acts and to defend China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity".
