Biden calls for the restoration of power to the civilian government in Sudan

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden called on the army in Sudan to return power to the civilian government in the country, stressing that the United States will continue to "stand by the Sudanese people and their nonviolent struggle."

"The events that occurred in the past days represent a serious setback, but the United States will continue to stand with the people of Sudan and their peaceful struggle to support the goals of the Sudanese revolution," Biden said in a statement issued shortly after he left Washington to attend the G20 meeting in Rome.

"Our message to the military authorities in Sudan is clear, the Sudanese people should be allowed to demonstrate peacefully, and power should be returned to the transitional government led by civilians," he said in the statement.

Biden also urged military leaders in Sudan to release the detainees immediately.
