• An accident between two trucks on the M-30 causes major traffic jams in Madrid

Madrid once again became a gigantic mousetrap on Tuesday in this collapsed month of October, the worst for mobility in the capital in the last 18 months.

The

return to face-to-face work

after the long pandemic, schools and universities also face-to-face, the

fear of contagion in public transport

(the use of

EMT

is at 80% of normal levels), the

multiple works

that have half capital lifted and

two major accidents

were added yesterday in an explosive cocktail that collapsed the east, south and west of the city.

Days like yesterday may just be the beginning of a more troublesome phase.

As explained from the

Department of Environment and Mobility

of the

City of Madrid

, traffic October 2021 (usually the worst month in traffic year) for now accounts for 90% of the October 2019. In this way and if continues to

rise up to the level of two years ago, Madrid is at risk of total collapse.

In addition, the large number of works that the Consistory is executing, with their corresponding lane cuts even in very sensitive points, such as the

Nudo Norte

, threaten to end up paralyzing the capital of Spain.

Yesterday, it all started at

The traffic jam on the M-30 this Tuesday, at the height of Ventas, heading north.JAVIER BARBANCHO

It was 5:35 a.m., when half the city was still asleep and traffic began to stretch in the capital. Two trucks, one for merchandise and the other for garbage, collided in the outer road of the

M-30

at the height of

the Ventas bridge

. Immediately, the serious accident -which did not cause significant injuries- forced to completely cut off the side road of the ring road and two lanes of the central road. It was just the moment when the M-30 began to receive vehicles, distributing them throughout the city.

This accident caused 20 kilometers of traffic jams on the M-30 and important traffic jams on at least six entrance highways: the M-23;

the

Valencia highway

;

the

highway of Andalusia

;

the

Toledo highway

;

the one from Extremadura

to

Cuatro Vientos

;

and

that of the Northwest

.

Accident with seven vehicles

At 9:05 a.m., another accident that affected seven cars forced two lanes of

Avenida de Andalucía

to be cut

in the entrance direction.

Four more damaged vehicles on Avenida de Andalucía,

Raimundo Fernández Villaverde

,

Avenida de Córdoba

and

Moncloa

did the rest.

Madrid almost completely collapsed for much of the morning.

Almost everything except the North.

The M-30 service road has collapsed.

The collapse was so important that the mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, apologized in statements to journalists from the

Plenary

of the City Council: "They have been monumental traffic jams, we do not have to put hot cloths. I apologize on behalf of the City Council for them" .

Almeida

announced that the City Council will install nine cranes "in nerve centers" of the city to prevent and unblock accidents and "improve procedures with mobility agents." This measure is already carried out on rainy days. From now on, they will be installed from Monday to Friday given the circulation problems of this month of October.

The municipal opposition accused the government team of causing a greater traffic jam every day by promoting the use of the car that they consider to be doing.

"The city of Madrid is going to become what Almeida promotes," denounced Rita Maestre, spokesperson for Más Madrid, "a city without restrictions, without public transport, without bike lanes and

a permanently stuck city

."

PSOE: "Madrid is a mess"

From the PSOE, its spokesperson,

Mar Espinar

, denounced that it has been to approve Madrid 360, the mobility strategy of the team of this Government, and "

Madrid is a chaos

." The socialist spokesperson urged the City Council to carry out information campaigns in favor of a safe public transport against infections and to really bet to redouble it in times and frequencies. The eight councilors of the

PSOE

attended the plenary session yesterday with the T-shirts of their

Eau d'Almeida

campaign

, which denounces that the aroma of the PP Government is "that of traffic jams."

An added problem to the return to traffic congestion is the

Asphalt operation

. In 2021, Almeida has decided to carry out the largest campaign in recent years, which has coincided with the return to face-to-face work and the recovery of post-pandemic normality. This Tuesday alone there were more than 40 streets affected by these resurfacing works in 16 districts. Years ago, these works were done in July and August so as not to seriously affect traffic as may be happening now.

To "the largest Asphalt operation in history", as the mayor likes to say, there are up to seven major permanent works such as those in

Plaza de España

, which keep the

Bailén tunnel

cut off

;

those of the

Bernabéu

, which causes cuts in

Castellana

,

Concha Espina

and

Padre Damián

;

or the remodeling work on the Nudo Norte, which affects the north of the M-30, the Castellana and the entrances to the capital through the

North highway

and the

M-607

.
