Agents of the Civil Guard, belonging to the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Madrid Command, have delivered this morning to the director of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC), a fragment of a Reliegos meteorite that His whereabouts were unknown and he was seized in the town of Hernani (Guipúzcoa). The recovery of the fragment (in the center of the image and with a plaque) has been possible, because it

was put up for sale on an Internet portal for a value of 27,500 euros

. The person responsible is being investigated for a crime of misappropriation. The

rock

It is about 20 centimeters in diameter and is shaped like a wedge.

It is already on display in a room in the museum along with the other pieces of the Reliegos meteorite that were already in the enclosure.

The Reliegos meteorite is an ordinary chondrite.

Chondrites were created more than 4.5 billion years ago and have not been remelted since then,

hence their value in understanding aspects of the earliest solar system, the origin of life,

or the synthesis of organic compounds.

The investigation began at the instigation of the MNCN, when the curator of the Geology Collection, which houses numerous meteorites, discovered the ad on the Internet,

advertising the sale of the meteorite fragment

, recognizing the labeling of the museum center. Aurelio Nieto, responsible for the collection, alerted SEPRONA of the Madrid Civil Guard Command, filing the corresponding complaint.

The agents began the investigation, managing to identify the author of the advertisement.

Once in the San Sebastian town, they checked the fragment of the meteorite and its labeling and

proceeded to investigate the advertiser for a crime of misappropriation.

The now investigated assures that

he found it in a box of this scientist

that was in a storage room that they emptied for non-payment.

This extreme is being investigated by the agents, since several fragments were collected at the site of the meteorite fall.

The fragment located is part of the meteorite that fell

in the town of Reliegos (León) at eight in the morning on December 28, 1947,

and it was the researcher Laborde Welinde, who died in 1993, who was in charge of studying it.

According to the newspaper PROA in 1947, that morning of April Fool's Day a roar was heard in the town that

made the neighbors think that a plane had crashed

. A few minutes later they were able to find out that the noise was the result of a huge stone from the sky, which had fallen a few meters from Ramira Santa María's house and left a groove in the ground 35 centimeters deep.

Nobody dared to touch that smoking and incandescent object that broke into several pieces and

was later guarded by the mayor, until it was handed over to the Air Force.

It was a type L5 chondrite and its weight was 8,900 kilograms.

It was the last cataloged in Spain, and it was also the last fall that was known until the fall of another in the Palencia town of Villalbeto de la Peña in 2004.

The anecdote of the matter is that now many fans know the importance of the

Reliegos

meteorite

(municipality of León located on the Camino Frances to Santiago) and many

pilgrims ask about it since there is no indication in the town to the exact place where it fell.

In relation to this type of crime, Seprona reminds you that you have to be suspicious of offers that are too good, it is advisable to avoid operations for transparency that do not leave a trace and that request money in advance.

They reiterate that the best prevention is information.
