In 2020, the Swedish Transport Agency eased the rules, which made it possible to rebuild even automatic cars into A-tractors.

Thanks to the rule change, Wiking Lindblad in Askersund has been able to build a unique A-tractor from the car that was available at home, an Opel Astra model year 2007. Something that more people choose to do - even though Volvo is still by far the most common A-tractor.

"There are many sharks," says Wiking Lindblad, who was the first in Sweden with his rebuilt Opel Astra in 2007.

- You do not want to be like everyone else.

However, it is important that you stand out for the right reason.

A green A-tractor with pink rims also stands out, but I want to drive something that is nice with the right look, interior and sound.

No rear seats allowed

According to the rules, the rear seat of the Opel had to be removed for passengers, but it has instead been given space for a solid sound equipment, something that is not always so popular among residents in the city center where the a-tractors circulate.

- But in fact, not many people complain, states Wiking Lindblad.

This is a city where motoring interest is high, not just among young people.

Västerbotten at the top

Åsele is the municipality with the most A-tractors per hundred inhabitants, closely followed by Vilhelmina and Ånge.

Askersund, where Wiking lives, also has a high share.

But it is an expensive hobby, especially measured in the economy that many teenagers have.

- It costs SEK 16 a liter, and you can not always afford it as a young person if you do not have a job, says Emma Rondell, whose A-tractor pulls about 0.9 liters per mile.

Lower speed

According to Mikael Andersson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Agency, the modern A-tractors pull around 1 liter per mile.

An older one can draw 3-4 liters.

So another effect of the change in the law is that emissions are reduced because the engine no longer needs up to the same high speeds to reach maximum speed.

But can not that effect be eaten up by the fact that more people now drive A-tractors?

- It is difficult to answer.

What you can think of is that it is a newer vehicle fleet that the A-tractor is built of today.

If you rebuild modern cars, there will normally be less emissions.
