It was on Friday 8 October that a powerful explosion occurred in an apartment building in the Bergnäset district in Luleå.

The house facade was printed and four people were arrested and initially suspected of general destruction and violation of the law on flammable and explosive goods.

Fragrance spray on hot plate exploded

Now SVT can reveal what caused it all.

It was a scent spray that was left on a hot plate in the kitchen and the pressure vessel exploded and led to a real bang.

- I'm waiting for the technical report, but it looks like an exploding fragrance spray bottle led to a bang and a pressure wave that caused an entire wall to be demolished.

The air expanded and quickly found a weak spot in the wall.

That is what we think has happened, says Fredrik Hansson, the police's preliminary investigation leader.

New interrogations are planned

Three of the suspects were written off from the investigation at an early stage and while the apartment owner remains a suspect but for general negligence.

- As I said, I await the technical report that should come this week and then there will be a new interrogation before we take a position on the investigation and whether the general dangerous negligence is prosecutable or not, says Fredrik Hansson.

Bostadsbolaget Lulebo's CEO Erik Öhrling is sparing with the comments about the incident.

- We hand over the criminal investigation to the police with a warm hand because we are not explosives technicians.

As far as I know, Lulebo has never before had a similar explosion in an apartment and I am glad that no one was injured because it was such a big bang, he says.

Twenty residents were evacuated

In connection with the explosion, about 20 people were evacuated.

SVT met Sven-Olof Leppäniemi the same day he was allowed to move home and then the feelings were mixed.

- It is very nice at the same time as you have a lot of thoughts.

One wonders what has really happened, he said then.
