Sudan: "The Cabinet Arrested", the airport was closed, and the television broadcasted patriotic songs

Reuters news agency confirmed witnesses to the arrest of the majority of members of the Sudanese Cabinet, a large number of leaders of pro-government parties and a member of the Sudanese Sovereign Council.

The agency had quoted Al-Hadath TV early today that the head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, will make an expected statement on the latest developments in the country.

Military forces had arrested a number of civilian leaders in Sudan before dawn today, at a time when a famous pro-democracy group called on the Sudanese to take to the streets to resist any military coup.

The Internet was completely cut off in the country, according to an AFP journalist, noting that mobile phones only receive calls and no calls can be made through them.

"Gunmen arrested a number of political and government officials from their places of residence," a government source told AFP.

Men in military uniforms cut off the roads linking the center of the Sudanese capital with Khartoum North and Omdurman, the two cities adjacent to the capital, while dozens of demonstrators took to the streets, blocking roads and burning tires, in protest against the arrest of government officials.

Sudanese state television began broadcasting patriotic songs a while ago, which usually indicates that a major political event is taking place in the country.

Al-Arabiya television confirmed the closure of Khartoum airport, "in light of reports of a coup in Sudan."
