The Saxon CDU politician Yvonne Magwas is to become Vice President of the Bundestag.

That said Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus on Monday before a parliamentary group meeting in Berlin.

The 41-year-old Magwas is the leader of the group of women in the Union faction.

Brinkhaus called Magwas an experienced parliamentarian who was also a relatively young member of the parliamentary group and, as a mother, was right in the middle of life.

There were several applicants who withdrew so that the parliamentary group would send a signal of unity, as Brinkhaus made clear.

Grütters and Widmann-Mauz have waived

The executive board of the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag had previously agreed on Magwas's candidacy on Monday.

The group met that evening to discuss Magwas's candidacy.

The MPs Monika Grütters and Annette Widmann-Mauz (both CDU) would have waived to stand, it said.

According to the information, the previous parliamentary manager of the Union parliamentary group, Michael Grosse-Brömer (CDU), had also expressed interest.

First, the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" reported on the candidacy of Magwas, citing parliamentary groups.

This should have avoided a vote in the CDU / CSU parliamentary group on the post.

As the strongest parliamentary group in the new Bundestag, the SPD will in future provide the Bundestag President, which should be the health politician Bärbel Bas.
