RTE, the French operator of the electricity transmission network, is submitting, this Monday, October 25, its report on the possible scenarios for achieving carbon neutrality in France by 2050, with more or less nuclear power.

Entitled “Energy future 2050”, this report responds to a request from the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, who had asked RTE to conduct a study on the energy transition.

Should we increase nuclear power or, on the contrary, turn to renewable energies to achieve carbon neutrality?

The issue of energy transition, global warming, but also the energy price crisis, are societal issues that Emmanuel Macron intends to appropriate before the start of the presidential campaign.

Two shutters

500 pages thick, this report was constructed in two stages.

The first part comprises the result of a public consultation with institutions, collectives but also individuals, which made it possible to collect 4,000 responses which served as a basis to constitute six scenarios for the energy future.

The second part, the one presented on Monday, specifically details the feasibility of these avenues.

Certain other avenues advance 100% renewable energy, namely wind and solar power, and therefore the abandonment of nuclear power, while others favor mixed energies between nuclear and renewable.

Highly anticipated report

A highly anticipated report.

Emmanuel Macron will indeed rely on the various elements of this text to decide whether or not it is necessary to launch the construction of six new nuclear reactors in France.

Anyway, the president has already warned, he will take the time to think it over.
