The Washington Post, a leading American daily, published an article on how American viewers can better understand the Netflix series 'Squid Game' in the middle of its homepage.

In an article titled 'Deciphering the hidden language and signals of the squid game for non-Koreans', the Washington Post explained the special meaning of the names and histories of the characters in the squid game, and the titles between the characters in Korean society.

It solves points that are difficult to understand with subtitles alone without knowing Korean society and culture well, and it shows the global popularity of the squid game.

The article explains what the names of the characters 'Han Mi-nyeo' and 'Oil-nam' have meaning, and that Ssangmun-dong and Seoul National University each symbolize the neighborhood of ordinary working class people and the stepping stone for success.

Also included are explanations of 'Dalgona' and 'Kanbu' that appeared in the squid game.

Michelle Yehee-ri, the head of the Washington Post Tokyo branch who wrote the article, was born in Seoul and serves as the president of the Association of Asian American Journalists.
