Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that it is possible to receive a different vaccine than the original dose for the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, but it is recommended to get the same type as possible.

In an interview with CNN, Fauci said, "It is recommended that you receive the same type of vaccine as the first vaccine as a booster shot.

Earlier, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved booster shots for Moderna and Janssen vaccine recipients, saying that booster shots can be given with a different vaccine than the first vaccine.

Reuters reported Fauci's remarks, saying it "contrasts with recommendations from the CDC or the Food and Drug Administration."

Both agencies recommended booster shots, but did not say which combination was best.

"You can mix different vaccines, but it's usually common sense to get the same vaccine again," Fauci said.
