The Executive Director of the Institutional Technical Support Sector at the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, Mohammed Al Mudharreb, stated that the authority intends to benefit from the results of the smart bike path project, in studying future decisions related to developing technologies to raise the level of quality and safety standards in bicycle paths, and reduce the possibility of accidents by Monitoring the intensity and congestion during cycling, and setting up smart alert panels for its drivers.

He confirmed to "Emirates Today" that the smart system for the bicycle path will start operating at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse for a period of four months, during which all data and information will be monitored on a daily basis and analyzed, to study the possibility of generalizing the experience in other locations.

Al Mudharreb explained how the system works, which depends mainly on the work of a camera known as the Computer vision camera, which distinguishes between a cyclist, a pedestrian, and a runner in the track.

He added that the system’s camera is linked to the RTA’s central control system, and therefore the system can, for example, send an alert and warn if a person is found walking in the bike lane, and in light of it, the driver is alerted through certain channels to be selected later, when the system is adopted and circulated in the event of satisfaction with the system. The results of the first stage of operation.

He added that the authority may study, in the future, the possibility of placing smart boards along the track, simulating cyclists when they commit certain mistakes or transgressions, such as exceeding the specified speed or not wearing a helmet, in the context of raising their awareness and alerting them to the need to adhere to safety rules.

Al Mudharreb pointed out that the smart bike path system helps the authority to provide real-time statistics on the number of path users, which is an indicator of the congestion of the path, and thus an indicator of the high probability of accidents due to the congestion, adding that given that the information is instantaneous and linked to the authority’s central control system, it The center can inform the concerned authorities of the presence of a large number of users, such as Dubai Ambulance, for example, and request the provision of an ambulance near the area in the event of an accident.

He said that the current stage is limited to data collection, analysis and ensuring its accuracy in order to ensure the safety and accuracy of information that can be used in developing the system's tools and adapting it to raising the level of safety in those tracks, and increasing the awareness of cyclists.

It is noteworthy that the smart bike path system is part of the Authority's implementation of a set of projects and plans aimed at making Dubai a bike-friendly city, where the use of modern technologies is necessary to encourage their use.
