In the early evening a loud bang could be heard in large parts of the Rhine-Main area, the cause of which was initially unclear.

Shortly before 5.30 p.m. the windows in Frankfurt trembled.

As ear witnesses testify, the sound could also be heard in Wiesbaden.

According to the Frankfurt police, the bang apparently came from an aircraft that broke the sound barrier.

A few weeks ago, a similar case caused quite a stir.

According to a police spokesman, the jet was heading north from southern Germany.

A

supersonic boom occurs when an aircraft flies faster than the noise from its engines spreads.

Numerous residents of Frankfurt and the surrounding area exchanged information about the bang on the Internet service Twitter.

In the Vordertaunus "the whole floor wobbled", wrote one user.
