“Today UNDP is establishing a special trust fund for Afghanistan in the tradition of partnering UN trust funds with the participation of many donors,” Steiner said in a statement to RIA Novosti.

He added that it is a tool through which the support of the international community can be directed through the organization to specific programs involving multiple institutions.

Steiner said 97% of households in Afghanistan could fall below the poverty line by the middle of next year, unless specific assistance measures are taken using UNDP.

Last year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with the head of the UN Development Program.
