The Security Council's extraordinary summit will be held on Wednesday at the initiative of the United Kingdom and the United States, diplomatic sources told the AFP news agency.

Must have traveled 590 kilometers

On Tuesday, North Korea tested a type of ballistic short-range robot that can be fired underwater from a submarine, in English abbreviated SLBM, according to the South Korean military.

This is now confirmed by North Korea's state news agency KCNA, which reports that it was a new type of SLBM robot with "lots of advanced control technology".

The robot is said to have been shot at the sea east of the Korean Peninsula.

It traveled about 590 kilometers and reached a maximum altitude of 60 kilometers, according to a South Korean source for AFP.

Several test shots

The White House emphasizes that the latest test firing further underscores the urgency of starting a dialogue with the North Korean government.

- Our offer remains to meet anywhere, anytime, unconditionally, says White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

In recent weeks, North Korea has tested several different types of robots.

Among other things, the country claims to have tested a so-called hypersonic robot, a technology that is described as a future superweapon.
