The Senegalese navy seized more than two tons of cocaine on board a ship intercepted off Dakar, the army said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ship, called

La Rosa

and "involved in international drug trafficking", was intercepted on Sunday 363 km off Dakar, said the Directorate of Public Relations of the Armed Forces (Dirpa) in the press release, without further details.

Several seizures in recent months

"The first excavations made it possible to discover pure cocaine on board for an estimated weight of 2,026 kg".

The flag of the vessel and the nationality of the five crew members were not specified.

"The vessel, cargo and crew were made available to the competent administrations for further investigations," added the Dirpa.

Several drug seizures, of varying magnitude, have been made in Senegal in recent months by customs and the defense and security forces.

The Senegalese navy had in particular seized in October 2019 off Dakar more than a ton of cocaine allegedly coming from Latin America and bound for Spain.
