Memorandum of Understanding in the space sector between the UAE and Israel

The UAE Space Agency signed a memorandum of understanding with the Israeli Space Agency (CNES) to enhance cooperation in scientific research, space exploration and exchange of knowledge to accelerate economic growth and human progress, in a manner that serves common interests and strengthens international partnerships in serving the march of science and knowledge in space science.

The memorandum of understanding was signed on the sidelines of the space week activities hosted by "Expo 2020 Dubai", where it was signed by Sarah bint Yousef Al-Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Technology and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Space Agency, and from the Israeli side by Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Orit Farkash Hacohen.

The agreement sets the framework for a strategic partnership to exchange knowledge and experiences in the fields of space data collection and analysis, as it lays the ideal foundations for a long-term partnership between the two sides in the service of science, knowledge and humanity.

Under the agreement, the two countries will work to enhance bilateral cooperation in a wide range of priority space fields, including exploration, scientific and technological research, data analysis, spaceflight, education and others.

The agreement also provides for the participation of two companies from the UAE private sector in submitting a proposal to develop scientific equipment for the Israeli “Beresheet 2” mission to the moon, which aims to land a spacecraft on the moon by 2024, which constitutes an additional qualitative leap for the Emirati private sector’s contribution to space exploration efforts and investment in Its sciences, research and equipment.

The agreement also included cooperation in a joint research project between universities in the UAE and Israel, on space applications, including the detection of red palm weevil, and aerosol mapping, in addition to monitoring the phenomenon of red tide on the coasts, through space data that the Israeli side will share. From the mini-satellite project to monitor vegetation and the environment, a joint project between the Israel Space Agency and the French Space Agency.

Al Amiri said: “Exchange of knowledge and expertise in the field of space is an essential part of the UAE’s vision to create a competitive and sustainable national space sector that achieves future growth and consolidates our path for the next fifty years, as we believe that cooperation and partnerships throughout history have been the key to the most successful space programs in the world. throughout history.”

She added, "Israel has an active and developed space sector, while the UAE entered history from its widest doors by joining the list of countries exploring space, and having an insight into the future industry. Within the framework of this strategic partnership, we are pleased to unite our efforts to serve the global march in space sciences."
