Concession reindeer husbandry is a form of reindeer husbandry that is conducted in the eastern part of Norrbotten and below the Lapland border along the Torne and Kalix river valleys.

Korju Sami village is one of eight concession Sami villages and in it alone there are 280 different reindeer owners.

Ove Emanuelsson is the chairman of the Sami village and he says that concession reindeer husbandry may only be conducted by Sami who have received a permit (concession) from the County Administrative Board in Norrbotten.

- We have a concession of 2,800 reindeer in the winter herd when the slaughter is deducted.

That is what we are counting on now to see that those pieces are correct, says Ove Emanuelsson.

Thirty reindeer per household

This autumn morning, several of the village's reindeer are gathered in a large pasture between Övertorneå and Kuivakangas.

In order to have so-called care reindeer, you must own or use an agricultural property.

Then there is the requirement that you must live within the Sami village and in total you can have up to thirty reindeer reindeer per household.

- It's a nice hobby.

It takes longer to become poor with reindeer than with golf, says reindeer owner Kent Alanentalo.
