A panel discussion entitled “Increasing Equal Opportunities in the Space Economy” - organized by the Emirates Council for Gender Balance, in cooperation with “Cartier” within the “Space Week” at Expo 2020 Dubai, and within the framework of the “International Council of Women” initiative, dealt with one of the main events of the pavilion Women in the exhibition - the best ways to organize and benefit from the space economy sector, and how to build a more equitable future, amid the legal issues raised by the commercial use of outer space and inquiries about public and private property, traffic in space, and ways for this new industry to flourish in a sustainable way that achieves the public interest For humanity, how to ensure that women play leadership roles in shaping space, and how a gender-balanced space economy leads to greater prosperity, progress and sustainable development.

The session aims to discuss ways to enhance women’s participation in this important sector on an equal basis with men, as it is a promising future industry whose global revenues are expected to exceed one trillion dollars by 2040, up from 350 billion dollars currently.

Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Technology, Chairperson of the Emirates Space Agency, delivered the keynote speech of the session, in which international officials and experts in the space and related sectors participated, including:The Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications of Brazil, Marcos Pontes, the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in Italy, Simonetta Des Bebo, Member of the Committee of World Space Week in Slovenia, Maroshka Strah, the main lecturer and co-founder of Space Mission in Latvia, Ksenia Moskalenko, and expert At the Center for Science and Climate Change in South Africa, Dr. Jane Oloch, Program Director at Spire Global UK, Dr. Hina Khan, Director General of the Philippine Space Agency, Dr. Joel Joseph, former astronaut at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Oko Yamazaki, expert Aerospace from Slovakia, Dr. Michaela Musilova, and Moroccan researcher and astronomer, Maryam Chedid, and the session was moderated by Chief Operating Officer of the US Space Corporation, Shelly Brunswick.

During her keynote speech to the session, Al-Amiri said that “the race towards space is gaining global momentum at the present time, and that is why it is necessary socially and economically to ensure that women have access to the same opportunities,” stressing that “there is no shortage of women who are able to leave a mark in the field of aviation and air navigation, For the space industry to thrive in the future, we need to create a framework that empowers and inspires women to participate in this space.”

She stressed that "the empowerment of women has been a fundamental pillar of social and economic growth since the establishment of the UAE 50 years ago, and gender balance has been one of the basic principles of the state, and empowering the next generation of women is an essential element in the state's vision for the next 50 years," adding that "women It represents about 56 percent of graduates from UAE public universities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and this is critical in our efforts to build a globally competitive and world-class space industry.”

Al-Amiri announced that “quality and equal opportunities for both genders are important pillars in the Emirates Space Agency, and that more than half of the employees in the Emirates Space Agency are women, and we strive to maintain gender balance in the Emirates Space Agency, believing that scientific and technological progress, creativity and innovation are achieved with this equality.” ».

She said that "there is still more to be done globally, in the field of achieving equal opportunities for men and women in the aviation industry, as the United Nations estimates that women constitute about 20% in this industry, which calls for more effort to raise this percentage."

She added, "The new mission announced by the UAE, this October, to send a spacecraft on a 3.6 billion km journey to explore the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars, includes launching a new Emirati spacecraft in 2028, to land on an asteroid more than 560 million km away. From Earth, and if the mission succeeds, the UAE will become the fourth country in the world to land a spacecraft on an asteroid, which is not an easy task, but it reflects our commitment to human progress, and will provide new opportunities for gender balance and create equal opportunities in technical and scientific roles for women, as it will support the establishment of new Emirati airlines We will cooperate with research centers and international universities, and provide new opportunities for women in academia and scientific research.”

Vice-President of the Emirates Council for Gender Balance, Mona Ghanem Al Marri, said that the "International Council for Women" initiative comes to enhance the relationship of cooperation and partnership between Expo 2020 Dubai and the Emirates Council for Gender Balance, as it is the main umbrella for events and activities related to women and gender balance in this regard. The global event, in which 192 countries are participating, in addition to international institutions and organizations, pointing out that the initiative aims to shed light on issues related to women and ways to promote gender balance around the world, in order to achieve the fifth goal of the sustainable development goals on gender balance and empowering women. And girls around the world in all fields, stressing the importance of giving women the opportunity in the space sector, which goes beyond mere exploratory missions, as it is an integrated ecosystem that also provides wonderful economic opportunities, as well as benefiting all of humanity, it is important that women have their full opportunity to participate in it.

She expressed her pride and pride in the success and achievements of Emirati women in this vital sector, as a result of the support and encouragement they receive from the leadership to join various disciplines and contribute to all areas of development.
