October 19, 2021 The BBC publishes data on its website regarding a new mutation of the Delta variant of the SarsCoV2 virus that is causing an increasing number of infections in the UK.

According to the data, the incidence of the sub-variant, classified as 'AY.4.2' and considered by some as a new type of 'Delta Plus', is relative to 6% of registered infections, therefore very limited.

Studies are underway to understand its danger but according to professed Francois Balloux, director of the UCL Genetics Institute, its transmission capacity would be at most 10% higher than the other mutations of the virus and in any case it is very unlikely that it will take root on a large scale or escape vaccine coverage.

In fact, at the moment it is classified with a low level of risk and has not been included in the lists of the most dangerous variants.

"At this stage I would say wait and see, do not panic - said Balloux - it could be slightly more transmissible, but it is not something absolutely disastrous as we have seen previously".
