Frequent accidents in the country

The bus was traveling on a road between Guayaquil and Ambato, near the town of Colta in the province of Chimborazo in the south of the country, at the time of the accident.

The public transport vehicle crashed into a ravine more than 100 meters long shortly after midnight (local time), according to a statement from the Ecuadorian emergency operations center.

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in Ecuador, where the roads are poor, poorly lit and very narrow.

Several coach accidents since the start of the year have killed around 20 people.
