Russia NATO expels eight Russian diplomats for espionage
Russia announced on Monday the closure of its representation before NATO, as well as that of the military liaison and information offices of the Atlantic Alliance in Moscow, in response to the recent expulsion of eight Russian diplomats.
"In response to NATO actions, we are
halting the activities of our permanent representation
to the Alliance, including the work of our main military representative, as of November 1," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei declared at a press conference. Lavrov, after meeting with his counterpart from Guinea-Bissau, Suzi Carla Barbosa.
In addition, he announced the upcoming closure of the NATO military liaison mission office in Moscow, noting that "the accreditation of its employees will be revoked as of November 1."
"It will also close the NATO information office in Moscow,
based in the Belgian Embassy," he added.
The head of Russian diplomacy pointed out that the representatives of the Alliance will be able to direct their doubts to the Russian Embassy in Belgium.
One of the NATO ambassadors in Moscow may carry out similar functions in the Russian capital, the Foreign Ministry later specified.
Lavrov recalled that NATO withdrew the accreditation of eight Russian diplomats in early October
"without giving an official explanation"
of the reasons for this decision, despite the fact that days before the Secretary General of the Alliance,
Jens Stoltenberg,
insisted on the interest in "normalize relations with Russia".
The head of Russian diplomacy found that in the last six years the Russian representation before NATO was reduced on two occasions and
the level of dialogue and cooperation dropped to a minimum.
"All this confirms that NATO is not interested in any dialogue on equal rights or in any joint work. Therefore we do not see the need to continue acting as if a change were possible in the future, because NATO has already declared the impossibility of these changes, "he concluded.
