British police are investigating the possible link between the murder of Conservative MP David Amess and his close relationship with Qatar, from where he returned from a trip last Wednesday, according to

The Times

. The perpetrator of the assassination, Ali Harbi Ali, is the son of a former Somali government spokesman,

Harbi Ali Kullane

, and could have acted for political

reasons

, given Qatari support for current Somali President

Mohamed Adullahi Mohamed

.

David Amess, 69, was in fact chairman of the parliamentary group created specifically in Westminster to improve Qatari relations.

Amess even registered a visit in 2020 and in the middle of a pandemic

, paid for by the Government of the Arab country for 10,000 euros.

In July he was personally invited to the Goodwood horse festival, also sponsored by Qatar.

Despite this new lead, investigators

continue to examine the jihadist connections

of 25-year-old

Ali Harbi Ali

, whose photo was first made public on Monday.

The young man had been referred to the radicalization prevention program (PREVEN) by his own teachers at a South London school, although he had no record of terrorism.

Family friends in the Croydon neighborhood declared that the young man became even more radical during the Covid lockdowns, listening for hours to the videos of the extremist preacher Anjem Choudary.

Choudary sparked a flurry of criticism on Saturday by claiming that David

Amess was possibly assassinated for his defense of the state of Israel

.

Mosques in the south-east of England have meanwhile issued a joint statement condemning "the indefensible atrocity" and stressing how the "Tory" MP had been "a pillar of support for the local Muslim community."

The British Parliament in the meantime paid tribute to the murdered MP in a special session chaired by

Boris Johnson

and amid calls to contain the wave of hate crimes against MPs.

The Vice President of the Government,

Dominic Raab

, admitted having received three death threats and threats against his physical integrity in the last two years, which he reported at the time to the police.

Labor MP

Margaret Hodge

also acknowledged having been the victim of repeated anti-Semitic attacks, even from members of her own party.

The Vice Speaker of the House of Commons,

Eleanor Laing

, called for "a culture of warmth" among politicians, voters and the media.

"Everyone talks about how kind and gracious David Amess was

. It's a shame the media is waiting until our MPs are no longer with us so they can say those things."

Amess's widow, Julia, appeared in public for the first time since the tragedy and

went with one of her daughters to lay flowers

at the Leigh-on-Sea Methodist Church, where her husband was assassinated last Friday during an election ceremony.
