Will French boats be able to continue fishing around the Channel Islands?

Crucial meeting this Monday, October 18 between the authorities of Jersey and the French Minister of the Sea Annick Girardin.

A soap opera that has lasted since the entry into force of Brexit.

London and Jersey have granted only half of the fishing licenses claimed by Paris.

France which wants a solution by November 1.

Give our licenses back

 ", "

give us back our licenses

 ".

Annick Girardin takes over Margaret Thatcher to show France's firmness.

So far, only 200 licenses have been granted by Jersey to French fishermen who are asking for 230 more.

France continues to raise its voice and threatens.

Countervailing or retaliatory measures will be taken if the situation remains as it is.

This could translate into a reduction in electricity deliveries to the Channel Island.

Jersey depends on the British crown but also depends energetically on France, where 90% of its electricity comes from.

The post-Brexit agreement provides that European fishermen already present can continue to work in certain British waters, provided they obtain these valuable licenses.

Break in trust or pragmatic solution

The waters of Jersey, rich in fish and shellfish, where French and English had tolerated each other for so many years, have become the symbol of the post-Brexit era.

Break in confidence, says Paris.

Pragmatic and reasonable solution, says London.

This Monday's meeting is therefore important.

French fishermen, even those who have obtained their licenses, remain united.

They hope for announcements later this week.
