October 17, 202117 US missionaries and their families, including some children, were kidnapped by a gang in Port-au-Prince on Saturday as they left an orphanage.

Details are unclear, local officials said the missionaries were allegedly kidnapped while on a bus bound for the airport.

Security in Haiti collapsed as the country's politics disintegrated.

According to some estimates, gangs control about half of the city.

On Monday, a gang targeted a school bus in Port-au-Prince, shooting and injuring at least five people, including students, while another public bus was hijacked.

But even in a country accustomed to widespread lawlessness, the kidnapping of such a large group of Americans is decidedly unusual.

Parts of the Haitian capital, including the place where the kidnappings took place, are so dangerous that many residents have fled, leaving the once-bustling streets almost abandoned.

Many of the streets have been handed over to gangs, with few pedestrians venturing out even during the day.

Kidnappings of rich and poor are sadly common, with American missionaries being kidnapped just a day after the United Nations Security Council extended its mission to Haiti for nine months in a unanimous vote on Friday.

Many Haitians have called for the US to send troops to stabilize the situation, but the Biden administration has been reluctant to commit the boots on the ground.
