Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes to be able to work well with the future federal government.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has always taken a “sensible and solution-oriented approach”, said Erdogan on Saturday after a meeting with the Chancellor in Istanbul.

He hopes to be able to continue the cooperation.

"I wish the new government and its Chancellor every success."

The leaders of the SPD, Greens and FDP presented a joint paper on Friday on the outcome of their exploratory talks and pleaded for coalition negotiations.

As government spokesman Steffen Seibert announced on Twitter, the talks between Merkel and Erdogan took place on Saturday in the presidential villa in the historic Tarabya district on the Bosphorus.

When announcing the trip, Seibert said that topics included the role of Turkey as a NATO partner and the refugee agreement with the EU.

Turkey is on one of the main transit routes for refugees to Europe.

"Questions of civil rights and dealing with civil society" are also always addressed at Merkel's meeting with Erdogan, Seibert said on Wednesday.

Several German citizens are imprisoned in Turkey.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, their number is in the “middle double-digit range”.
