At the moment, a major upgrade of the TV broadcasts is underway, which means that it may be black in the box in many TV sets in the coming weeks.

Just over a year ago, the Swedish Press, Radio and Television Authority decided that all TV channels in the terrestrial network should switch from MPEG2 to MPEG4, a compression technology that provides a sharper picture.

Sharper image

- The image that comes out to the viewers becomes a little sharper when we can broadcast in HD technology in more channels, explains Kristina Ekengren, communications manager at Teracom.

The disadvantage of the new technology upgrade is that older TVs cannot handle the new technology.

The reorganization has already started in eastern Sweden (an area that covers Stockholm, Uppland, Södertälje, Gävle and Norrköping, among other places) and will take place in stages throughout Sweden in October.

New equipment

And the TV stores in eastern Sweden have already started to get many questions.

- Why do my TV channels not work is probably the biggest question, says Niklas Jalvemo, sales manager at Elgiganten, and continues:

- Everyone has to do a new channel search and for many it is enough, but some will need to buy new equipment.
