• United Kingdom British police describe the murder of MP David Amess as a "terrorist incident" linked to "Islamist extremism"

The

British police are

questioning this Saturday the

25-year-old Briton

who this Friday stabbed to death the Conservative deputy David Amess while attending voters in his constituency in eastern England, in an

alleged act of terrorism

.

In a statement issued at dawn, the London Metropolitan Police (Met) said that the

murder of Amess in a church in Leigh-on-Sea

, in the county of Essex,

"has been declared a terrorist incident

, and the Command against Met terrorism will lead the investigation. "

"The senior national coordinator of police surveillance against terrorism, Deputy Commissioner Dean Haydon, has formally declared the incident as terrorism.

The initial investigation has revealed a possible motivation linked to Islamist extremism

," the note said.

Amess, 69, died after being stabbed multiple times during a meeting with citizens of his constituency at the Belfairs Methodist Church.

A 25-year-old man, who according to police sources is British of Somali descent, was arrested at the same crime scene and remains in custody at an Essex police station.

The investigation is being led by the Met's Counter-Terrorism Command, which works in collaboration with colleagues from the Eastern Region Specialized Operations Unit (ERSOU) and Essex Police, the official note added.

"As part of the investigation, officers

are conducting two-way searches in the London area,

" according to police.

Authorities

believe the suspect "acted alone"

and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, although investigations into the circumstances continue, the police note reported.

All political parties have expressed consternation at the crime, which has evoked the memory of Labor MP Jo Cox, shot dead by a man linked to the far right in June 2016, days before the Brexit referendum.

The British Home Secretary,

Priti Patel

, has ordered

that the security measures of all MPs be reviewed

, who in the United Kingdom usually organize public events on Fridays in which citizens of their constituencies can come to express their complaints and requests.
