Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said today, Saturday, that the government is keen not to interfere in any file related to the judiciary, and asked the courts to take what they deem appropriate.

This came in a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office following a meeting between Mikati, the Minister of Justice and the Head of the Supreme Judicial Council, after 7 people were killed in violence in Beirut last Thursday.

"The complete file of the events that took place is in the custody of the security services under the supervision of the competent judiciary," Mikati said, adding, "The judicial authority must take whatever measures it deems appropriate by itself."

Al-Jazeera correspondent said that the meeting discussed recent events and investigations.

The National News Agency stated that the meeting discussed the file of security incidents that took place in Tayouneh, and the need to expedite investigations to uncover the full circumstances of what happened, and to refer those responsible for these events to the competent judiciary.

Seven people were killed and 32 others wounded in a security dispute and an exchange of fire last Thursday in the Tayouneh-Badaro area in Beirut.

The clash took place while a number of people headed to the Adliya area to participate in a protest sit-in called by Hezbollah and the Amal Movement in front of the Palace of Justice to demand the departure of the judicial investigative judge in the file of the Beirut port explosion, Judge Tariq Bitar.

Reuters reported that the Lebanese Supreme Judicial Council will meet next Tuesday with the judge of Beirut Port, Bitar, to hear his opinion on the course of the investigation.
