The contours of the future governments are becoming clearer not only at the federal level, but also in the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin.

In the capital, the SPD, the Greens and the Left want to start coalition negotiations in Berlin next week.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one step further, coalition negotiations between the SPD and the left began here on Friday.

In both states, the state parliaments were re-elected on September 26th, parallel to the general election.

In Berlin, the SPD, the Greens and the Left, who have been ruling the capital together since 2016, met on Friday for a final exploratory discussion.

Now they want to enter into coalition negotiations, as representatives of the three parties announced.

The basis should be a paper with 19 guidelines on which they agreed.

There points such as more housing, a functioning administration, the employment of teachers or more positions in the police are recorded.

The start of the negotiations is planned for next Wednesday or Thursday, said the SPD state chairman Franziska Giffey.

Before that, party committees still have to agree to what is considered certain.

The meetings of the state boards of the SPD and the Left as well as the Green State Committee are planned for Monday.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the main round met in Schwerin for an initial two-hour discussion to set the timetable and set up seven working groups for the individual policy areas.

The working groups should start working on a coalition agreement at the weekend.

"The exploratory talks were good, the start today was good," said the SPD state chairman and Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig.

The parliamentary group leader of the Left in the state parliament, Simone Oldenburg, added in the joint press conference: "The chemistry is right." There is a basis of trust.
