At least 46 people have died in a fire in a 13-story house in southern Taiwan.

Dozens have been taken to hospital.

The fire broke out at 03 o'clock, local time, and the rescue work was still going on in the afternoon, according to the city of Kaohsiung's rescue service.

The fire itself is supposed to have been extinguished, but its violent course is said to have completely destroyed many floors.

According to a statement from the rescue service, the fire was "extremely violent".

In the building, there have been shops on the ground floor and apartments above.

The cause of the fire is not known.
